The cover design is actually a piece done by Mr. Richard Moult in 2010 called “Bean Na Bainnse” (Lady Of The Wedding). Some of us in the ONA like to ‘interpret’ this to allude to Baphomet who is said to be the Bride of Satan. The original painting can be found at RM’s WordPress.
Personally: I love the use of contrast in the piece. There is in the background a living scenery of clouds, and stuff. In the foreground there is a living woman. But in her hand is a skull. To me I see this in a few very different ways. It first reminds me of a Shaivite initiation and some rite of in Vamachara where the initiate sleeps for a night with a corpse or skull to contemplate on Life, Death, and who the initiate is.
I also see the skull as the Temple or House of all our thoughts, visions, dreams; all that we feeling; all that Life is and all our experiences in Life literally comes into our field of conscious awareness inside our skulls. This concept of reality being a byproduct of the brain/mind and the painting itself with the sky and skull contrast reminds me of a question I once read when it was asked: “Is the skull above the sky?”
Also the women holding the skull calls to my mind the idea and image of repentance and penance of a pilgrim. This also reminds me of how the Buddha said once for us to think often of our own mortality. Lastly the skull also reminds me of Golgotha, and the Lady of the Wedding thus reminds me of the Bride alluded to in the Song of Songs [Song of Solomon].
Oh yes, I also remember there is an old cartoon on Youtube called “Heman, Master of the Universe” where he goes to talk to some bird lady who lives in a skull shaped castle called “Castle Grey Skull.” The bird lady seems to be some sort of seeress or prophetess. This Lady in the painting thus reminds me of the bird lady from that Heman cartoon also. I can’t remember the bird girl’s name, Lady Aberline, or Madam Albright, or something.
