THE GREEN DAMASK ROOM

The Green Damask Room, by Richard Moult (2010)

It’s a recent painting of David Myatt done in that familiar and eerie or ‘emotionally’ disturbing style of Mr. Moult. [Click on picture for source].

My favorite thing about the picture is the outfit Mr. Myatt is wearing. I love how Mr. Moult put in the little detailing of the criss-cross pattern of DM’s dress shirt. I would have loved to see what kind of shoes DM was wearing. I imagine nice, shiny black shoes. But I have a nagging suspicion that DM would prefer comfy loafers. I could be wrong.

I read somewhere that boys in England are taught to properly cross their legs like a gentleman at the knees like how DM is seated in the picture.

The posture of DM in the picture, with his hands resting, leaning back on the couch, with eyes looking Up makes me feel as if DM in the picture is in a very relaxed state, or rather a trance or meditative state. There is a meditative technique where you keep your eyes open and looking up towards your third eye area. I know in this picture he’s looking at the Crystal.

Even though Mr. Moult seemed to have captured DM in some sort of relax – almost hypnotic state – something about DM in the picture seems to express tension, or discomfort. If you look closely at DM’s left hand, which is on his leg, you notice that it is not relaxed, but gripping the fabric of his dress pants, as if to suggest a “holding-on” feeling of some sort being felt by DM in the picture. I can’t explain it well, but it’s like DM’s mind is being drawn “in” or “out” somewhere, but that a part of him is holding on not wanting to fully go.

I also like the studs in the couch, which looks to be made of velvet. There is a Septagon outlined in the dangling Crystal. But I see something in the Crystal, like an image of some kind which DM is noticing??

On the side of the Crystal nearest DM’s face seems to be a rectangular faint picture of some kind. Almost like a television or movie screen is being reflected in the Crystal. I don’t know if the rectangular thing is even anything Mr. Moult intentionally put in there. But in my mind’s eye, I imagine it to be a man – maybe DM – looking out a window into space, into a galaxy and stars. That’s just my personal interpretation.

I also like the squiggly Angle thing just above the Crystal, which makes regular cameo appearances in the Sinister Tarot – also done by Mr. Moult.

David Myatt’s face in the picture – or the style RM uses here – reminds me of Van Gogh. Maybe it’s because Van Gogh’s self portrait had a red beard or something? I’m not a huge Van Gogh fan because his pictures don’t look real. I’m more into art that captures realism in a realistic way; which Mr. Moult has done here.

Lastly, I love how Mr. Moult captured the lighting in the painting. If it were a photograph, I would say that the camera had a Green filter lens. I like how there is just a faint glow of Green just behind DM’s head.

All in all, this is my favorite picture of David Myatt yet. Now all I’d like to see is a self portrait of RM like this :)

Kayla- The green color reminds me of the emerald city of Oz. So David Myatt here is the Wizard of Oz in his emerald green room… the man behind the mask if you will.

Chloe: Oh, the Green Damask Room is a real room somewhere in  Leeds?
